Regional ambition

A South West home for boxing and sport

Plymouth sits between Devon and Cornwall with the coaches, champions and community club already in place. Our vision is to become the region’s go-to hub for amateur boxing pathways, camps and coach development — without claiming an official designation we have not been given.

Ambition / vision — not a live service yet. The club you can join today is on our homepage timetable.

Why Plymouth

  • City population plus reach into mid-Devon and Cornwall for weekend camps and squads
  • Established club culture since 2011 and a not-for-profit CIC structure funders recognise
  • World-class proof: professionals already choose this gym to improve, while the community club runs for local beginners
  • Industrial-estate home with room to grow if tenure is secured

The region is already investing in activity

Sport England named both Plymouth (with Active Devon) and Cornwall (with Active Cornwall) among its new Place Partnerships in November 2025, aimed at helping the least active communities move more. A community-owned boxing home on the Plymouth–Cornwall border is well placed to work alongside that effort on both sides of the Tamar.

Plymouth’s own youth workers have spotted a boxing gap

When Plymouth City Council’s youth service asked young people what they wanted, boxing came up as one of the most popular sports. Active Devon reported that there are “significant geographical gaps in boxing provision in Plymouth, particularly in the north of the city”. Our gym is on Burrington Way in PL5, in the north of Plymouth. A secure, community-owned home here would let us stand alongside the youth workers and community settings now running non-contact sessions, and give young people somewhere to go next when they want to train properly. What a hub could offer

  • Regional amateur training camps and multi-club sessions
  • Coach education and England Boxing pathway support, as an England Boxing affiliated club [confirm: delivery partners]
  • Show hosting and community fight nights that celebrate local talent
  • Shared facility use with compatible sports and youth partners

Show nights at home, done properly

One of the best things a club can give its boxers is a home show: family in the seats, local sponsors ringside, and a night that raises money for the club. In a building we own, we want to host regular England Boxing-licensed club shows for boxers from across Devon and Cornwall.

  • Every show permitted through England Boxing, with the date agreed with the region and a named club official responsible [confirm: who would lead show permits]
  • A registered doctor at ringside, qualified officials and fair, safe pairings, as England Boxing rules require for every licensed bout
  • The right council licence for the venue, because boxing in front of an audience is licensable entertainment
  • Ticket and sponsor income going back into the club and the building fund

England Boxing’s own guidance says charity and corporate fundraising fight nights should be delivered through an affiliated club with the experience to run them safely. That is exactly the kind of host we want to be. [confirm: shows Intense has hosted before, and where]

What we will not say

We will not call ourselves “the official England Boxing centre for the South West” unless that is formally true. We will say we are building the strongest community-owned boxing home this side of the region can rely on.
